Best Books to Read for Musicians

March 20, 2018

Hello everyone! I’ve been a senior artist manager for a little while now, and I’m finally about to graduate university (yay!), so I thought I’d do a post on the best books to read for musicians who want to know a little more on how the music business works. In this day and age, independent artists have to do everything for themselves if they want to succeed, which can be a pretty daunting task when you don’t

know where to start. So, here are my best books to read to get you started.

1. Music: The Business by Ann Harrison. At uni, this book has been on every single reading list I’ve ever been given, and is pretty much the bible. There are newer versions out, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the older versions for those on a budget – I actually have an older version myself, and it does the job just fine.

2. Artist Management by Paul Allen is also a great read. It’s phrased in a more human way which makes it easier to digest, and it talks about things from a purely managerial perspective, which is great for self-managed artists.

3. Anything by Bob Baker. It’s like having a conversation with a mate in the pub about social media and marketing techniques. Great for anybody trying to improve their social presence.

4. The Music Instinct by Philip Ball. This one is a little more academic, but it’s great to understand the history, physiological and psychological processes behind music, and is a pretty interesting read for songwriters.

5. Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks. This one is purely psychological and looks at the links between music and psychological traumas and disorders. It’s not really a vital read for your music career, but it’s damn fascinating!

So, there we have it. My top five books to read for anyone getting started in the music industry. Hit me up with your recommendations too!
